Bárbara Marlene Teixeira Pinheiro finished her Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Laboratory Sciences at the University Institute of Health Sicences (IUCS-CESPU) in 2015 and in 2018 finished her Master’s degree in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP/FCUP-UP). Her Master’s thesis resulted in a scientifical article, with first authorship, entitled “Ecotoxicology of deep-sea environments: Functional and biochemical effects of suspended sediments in the model species Mytilus galloprovincialis under hyperbaric conditions” published in the scientific journal Science of the Total Environment (doi:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.03.196). Between March 2019 and February 2020, Marlene was contracted as a researcher in the project HIPERSea “Collection and Life Support in a Hyperbaric system for Deep-Sea Organisms” (reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-033889 (AAC/03/SI/2017)), a project with the goal to develop technologies to collect, transport and maintain deep-sea species in laboratory settings in deep-sea conditions. Currently, Marlene is a Biology PhD student at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto with a FCT grant (SFRH/BD/147834/2019) and her work aims to study the effects of deep-sea mining related stressors coupled with climate change scenarios. Her work is being developed at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research – CIIMAR-UP.
