I have a BSc in Chemistry (1993) from the University of Porto and a Ph.D. in Chemistry (2000) from the same University. I am currently an Associate Professor at the University of Porto, where I teach computational biochemistry, bioinformatics, and drug discovery courses. I do research in the same field, having published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals. My research focuses on studying the reaction mechanisms of enzymes with hybrid quantum/classical methods, in the modeling and simulation of complex enzymatic/proteomic systems, in the simulation of mutagenesis, and in drug discovery. The enzymatic systems I study generally have a therapeutic interest, for which drugs might be developed. I have recently focused on optimizing enzymes of industrial interest through rational mutagenesis and in the study of enzymatic and protein toxins from animal venoms.

1999 - 2020 TEACHING: I am a staff professor at the University of Porto, where I taught an average of 9-10 hours/week during the last 21 years. I taught more than 20 different courses to many different academic degrees, such as the BSc in Chemistry, Bsc in Biochemistry, MSc in Chemistry, MSc in Biochemistry, MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, MSc in Synthetic Biology, PhD in Chemistry, and PhD in Sustainable Chemistry. My courses focus on Quantum Chemistry/Computational Chemistry/Drug Discovery/Molecular Modelling.
