Patrick Silva graduated in Biomedical Pharmacy (2012-2015) from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. In 2017, he obtained his Master's Degree in Applied Pharmacology. In the scope of his thesis project, a Portuguese cohort of Machado-Joseph disease patients were characterized, and a preclinical pharmacokinetic study of a compound believed to be translated into a clinical setting soon was performed. After finishing his Master's Degree, Patrick received a Master's holder Research Fellowship joining the research team for the project European Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3/Machado-Joseph Disease Initiative (ESMI), co-funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) within the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND). Since October 2019, Patrick has been working on his PhD project entitled "Finding a blood-based biomarker for Machado-Joseph Disease: an integrated approach". Along his academic course, and due to his permanent interest in clinical studies, Patrick got admitted (twice) to an internship as a clinical research coordinator (CRC), totalling 12 months. In addition, he has also developed and got involved in several side-projects in the context of promoting quality of life in the ageing population, developing ideas and participating in science marathons.
