João Francisco Rodrigues Gomes Born in Lisbon, in 1985. Finished the MA in Contemporary Typographic and Editorial Practices in 2019, a study programme resulting from a partnership between the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Lisbon School of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), and in the BFA in Communication Design in 2010, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of ULisboa (FBAUL). Attends since 2020 the Doctorate in Design at the Lisbon School of Architecture (FAUL), and works in the area of the Humanities, with an emphasis on Design and a special interest in the fields of Type Design practice and teaching, Modular and Geometric Typography, Grids and Typographic Taxonomy, namely having teached at the MA in Communication Design at FAUL and as FCT scholarship awardee student, between 2021 and 2023, the Curricular Unit (UC) of Advanced Typography, under the responsibility of Professor Teresa Cabral, and since 2023, the UCs of Typography, also under the responsibility of Professor Teresa Cabral, and of Modular Typography, under the responsibility of Professor João Brandão. Co-lectured several Digital Type Design workshops under his position as Higher-Education Monitor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with Professors Jorge dos Reis and Nuno Vale Cardoso, and as a invited Trainer at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, with Professor João Brandão. Structured and lectured a theoretical Primer on Workflows and Digital Type Design class, under the coordination and guidance of Professor Cristiana Muge Serejo, for the Bachelor in Graphic Design at the School of Design of the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (Barcelos), as well as the two-session theoretical-practical module on Colour from the Typography and Colour curricular unit, under the coordination and guidance of Professor Jorge dos Reis, for the professional course in All Media Graphic Design at the Cascais School of Arts & Design (Monte Estoril). Regularly participates, since its inception in 2010, in the Typography Meeting – a landmark annual event in the Iberian, Portuguese-speaking and European spheres, hosted each year by a different Portuguese Design and Typography Higher-Education Institution and promoted by ATIPO (Typography Association of Portugal), under the auspices of ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) –, having already presented at said venue a paper in the form of communication, as well as seven academic posters dedicated to Modular and Geometric Type Design between 2015 and 2021. Has two chapters published in Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, both in co-authorship with Professor João Brandão and one of which also in co-authorship with Professor Jorge dos Reis, one paper with three other members of Typo.Graphicæ presented at ECADE 2022 in Porto, and two chapters published in DIGICOM 2023, in co-authorship with Professors João Brandão and Elisabete Rolo. Worked professionally in the field of Design, as a freelancer, for clients such as the Centre for African Studies of ISCTE–IUL, the Rectorate of ULisboa, FBAUL, Teatro Aberto or Inês de Castro Foundation, and as a hired Design Creative in the field of medical publications and events, for AdMédic Publicações Médicas Lda, having had a long multidisciplinary experience in graphic design, editorial design, stage design, print production, advertising, digital typesetting, text revision and web design. Was awarded in 2017, along with all the members of the Musaico choir and the CN Ensemble, the Portuguese Authors’ Society’s “Authors Award for the Best Work in Classical Music”, for the performance and CD recording of Eurico Carrapatoso’s “Magnificat em Talha Dourada” (“Magnificat in Gold Leaf”).
