As a brief summary of my research career, I have a Biology degree (1999-2004) and a Master in Biotechnology (2007) at the University of Málaga. I did my Ph.D. in Biotechnology (2010) at the University of Malaga, as part of the group of Professor Cayo Ramos, which belongs to the Genetics department. During my Ph.D., I have been working in functional genomics on a plant-pathogenic bacteria (Pseudomonas savastanoi), which is the causal agent of olive knot disease. I had been involved in the sequencing, annotation and analysis of its genome, as well as the identification of virulence factors using bioinformatics and functional genomic approaches. Throughout this period, I started my knowledge in Perl scripts. My first postdoctoral period (2010-2012), in the same research group, was focused in the bioinformatics analysis of others Pseudomonas genomes. Then, I joined as a postdoctoral researcher (2012-2016) in the Microbial Bioinsecticides (BM) Research Group led by Professor Primitivo Caballero, at the Public University of Navarra. The aim of my work was to characterize new Bacillus thuringiensis toxin genes with a wider spectrum of hosts by high throughput sequencing (HTS). This task included data analysis pipelines and evaluation of its insecticidal potential for some species of insects considered pests of agricultural, forestry or medical-veterinary interest. During this period, I processed more than 160 Gram positive and 35 Gram negative bacterial genomes from sequencing of raw data to the final identification of virulence factors. Later, I worked as Research assistant at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research) within the NUTRIMU (Nutrition and Immunobiology) research group (2017-2018). Over this period, I have worked on the INSEAFOOD Project, under the supervision of professors Helena Peres and Aires Oliva-Teles, generating tools to analyze the expression of genes involved in diverse metabolic pathways on different aquaculture fish species. Nowadays, I work as a Research assistant on ICETA (Instituto de Ciências, Tecnologias e Agroambiente), belonging to the Porto University, within the project “Occult Hepatitis C in Different Clinical Settings: Detection, Characterization and Diagnostic Tools (OCIDIAGNOSE)” since Sept 2019.
