André M. Carvalho is Assistant Professor of Quality Engineering and Management at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Graduated in 2012 from the University of Minho, after completing an Integrated Master's in Industrial Engineering and Management. He did his master's specialization in Global Business Engineering, with and exchange period at VIA University College in Denmark. Between 2012 and 2016, worked several positions in Quality Management and Logistics, at Bosch Portugal (Automotive, Car Multimedia) and Logoplaste Brazil (Plastics Processing). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 2016, André Carvalho initiated his PhD after received a Scholarship from the MIT Portugal Program, and enrolled in the Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing Doctoral Course at the University of Minho/MIT Portugal Program consortium. Between February 2018 and February 2019, he was a Visiting Student Researcher at the Sociotechnical Systems Research Center at MIT and remained as an MIT Portugal affiliate researcher until graduation in 2020. During his time in Boston, he was also Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University (March - September 2019). He concluded his PhD in early 2020. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From January to December 2020, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Denmark. His post-doc projects was focused on the development, promotion and use of Digital Tools for Quality and Risk Management in R&D and Production processes. While at DTU, André co-taught the Project Management course. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon returning to Portugal, he became an assistant Professor, first at Lusófona University (Lisbon, Portugal) and later at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado & Ave (Barcelos, Portugal). During this period he taught several Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management courses. In February 2023 André joined the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, where he teaches Quality Engineering and Management courses. He is a member of the UNIDEMI research center and the Associated Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (LASI). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In his research, he studies organizations as sociotechnical systems, with a focus on quality and performance management, organizational culture, and agility. He has sought to identify how organizations can best adapt to respond to the challenges of the world around us, with emphasis on change management and the sustainability of the ongoing business transitions. His research has been recognized by organizations such as the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) Society, the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) and American Society for Quality (ASQ).
