Jeannette Schmidt is a PhD in the Synapse Biology Research Group of Professor Ana Luísa Carvalho at CNC.IBILI at the University of Coimbra, Portugal where she is currently working with Luís Ribeiro, PhD on the characterization of the molecular machinery involved in neuronal polarization with particular interest in the role of dendritic endosomes. She graduated with an Honours Bachelors Degree in Science from University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland in 2011 and completed her PhD in Neuroscience and Disease at the Center for Neuroscience & Cell Biology (University of Coimbra) as part of the PhD Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) in 2021. The subject of her thesis evolved around the "Characterization of the Novel Rho GTPase Activating Protein, ARHGAP8, in the Central Nervous System". It focused on the identification of the role of ARHGAP8 in the development and molecular function of excitatory neurons of the hippocampus and cortex, in particular in connection with glutamatergic receptor function, plasticity mechanisms and neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Excerpted results of the work have been presented and discussed at several international meetings and conferences and a more complete synopsis of the work is in preparation for publication. Jeannette was also involved in the work of three more science literature publications. Her research work over the last 10 years has provided her with extensive knowledge in cellular and molecular biology techniques. She has been working continuously with genetically modified mouse models, carrying out colony as well as embryonic genotyping procedures. She has comprehensive expertise in cell line and murine neuronal primary cell culture preparation and maintenance, diverse transfection and transduction as well as biochemical analyses techniques. Her work also makes widespread use of fluorescence microscopy techniques and subsequent data analysis, including Sholl analysis as part of the examination of dendritic arborization, dendritic spine analysis as well as protein puncta localization and quantification.
