André Filipe Baltazar Alves is currently a Research Assistant (Técnico Superior) at the Local Health Unit of Coimbra (Unidade Local de Saúde de Coimbra, E.P.E.), working within the CHangeing – Connected Hubs in Ageing: Healthy Living to Protect Cerebrovascular Function project (Grant Agreement: 101087071). He is also a PhD student in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC), Portugal. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology – Biomedicine branch (University of Algarve, 2015) and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences (University of Algarve, 2017). He was awarded a PhD fellowship (Ref. 2020.09481.BD) funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) for the project “Beneficial effects of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila delivery systems in inflammatory bowel disease and prediabetes rodent models.” From 2018 to 2022, he worked as a research fellow at iCBR-FMUC in the HEALTHYAGING 2020 project (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-000012), within the “Insulin Resistance and Diabetic Angiopathy” research group coordinated by Flávio Reis, developing preclinical research on therapeutic and nutraceutical strategies for metabolic and renal disorders using animal models of prediabetes and diabetic nephropathy. He also participated in several research projects, including FRUTIFY [PTDC/SAU-NUT/31712/2017, FCT] and Remielinization promoting strategies for an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis [INOVC2020-SAAC-CENTRO-46-2016-01-5625], and contributed to the development of a semi-solid oral formulation for bioactive compound administration, currently under provisional patent application (PPP nº 20201000020530). A.F.B. Alves has published 14 articles in peer-reviewed journals and registered 1 patent. He has co-supervised 2 MSc and 2 BSc student works, received 2 awards, and participated as Research Fellow in 1 project and Researcher in 5 projects.
