Joshua Edward is a conductor-composer whose scholarship centers on artistic activism. He holds a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, a diploma in orchestral conducting from the Richard Wagner Konservatorium in Vienna, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition and Religion (double major) from Pepperdine University where he graduated summa cum laude. His conducting experience spans ensembles such as The New Symphony Vienna, Orquestra das Beiras, and numerous U.S.-based groups, and he has conducted in festivals including the Lake George Music Festival, Vienna Summer Music Festival, and São Paulo Contemporary Composers’ Festival. His compositions have been performed in North and South America, and he has been recognized with awards including the Alarm Will Sound Matt Marks Impact Fund and the Jimmy McHugh Composition Prize. Joshua’s current doctoral research at the University of Aveiro, developed in cotutela with UNICAMP, investigates the development of a critical artistic praxis for the conductor-composer, exploring how orchestral performance can serve as a tool for social justice and community transformation in Portuguese-speaking contexts.
