Joaquim Ferreira é Professor Coordenador com Agregação da Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Águeda da Universidade de Aveiro, onde leciona desde fevereiro de 2000. Até então, foi bolseiro de investigação científica na Universidade de Aveiro, professor adjunto na Escola Superior de Tecnologia do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco e professor auxiliar convidado no Departamento de Informática da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. É membro sénior do IEEE e investigador sénior integrado do Laboratório Associado Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), no seu polo de Aveiro, onde integra a sua Comissão de Gestão e lidera o grupo de investigação em Embedded Systems. A sua área de intervenção tem sido, predominantemente, a dos sistemas distribuídos embutidos de segurança crítica, com especial ênfase em sistemas de comunicação em tempo-real e tolerância a faltas, aplicados a redes de tempo-real para aplicações distribuídas de controlo e a sistemas inteligentes de transportes cooperativos. Tem desenvolvido atividade na coordenação de projetos quer na participação em projectos, nacionais e internacionais, lideradas por outros colegas. Foi coordenador do projeto SARWS (Real-time location-aware road weather services composed from multi-modal data), e coordenou a participação do IT nos projetos ICSI (Intelligent Cooperative Sensing for Improved traffic efficiency) e 5G-MOBIX (5G for cooperative & connected automated MOBIility on X-border corridors). Atualmente coordena a participação do IT nos seguintes projetos: • NextGen Mobility: Next generation of connected mobility and infrastructures. • Route25 - Agenda for Autonomous, Intelligent, Interoperable and Inclusive Mobility. Foi investigador principal do projeto PASMO - “Plataforma Aberta para o desenvolvimento e experimentação de Soluções para Mobilidade”, concluído em 2020, que permitiu instalar um laboratório vivo de larga escala, na área da mobilidade cooperativa e das cidades inteligentes disponível ao longo de vários quilómetros do corredor da A25 entre Aveiro e as praias, bem como nas zonas urbanas da Barra e da Costa Nova. Desde 2016 que tem colaborado dom A-to-Be na área dos sistemas cooperativos de transportes inteligentes, além da colaboração com várias outras empresas, no âmbito de projetos em co-promoção e de prestação de serviços.
