I am a research group leader at NOVA Medical School in Lisbon, Portugal, committed to advancing the understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD), specializing in dissecting AD molecular and cellular underpinnings, focusing on synaptic dysfunction, endocytic trafficking defects, and the pivotal role of genetic risk factors in these processes. I earned a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry in 1999. I became fascinated with the brain, thus pursuing a master's degree in neuroscience (2001) and a Ph.D. in the same field (2007) from the University of Lisbon. During my doctoral research at the prestigious Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, I gained important insights into beta-amyloid-dependent synaptic and endosomal dysfunction, which laid the groundwork for my future work on AD. I realized the significance of endosomal trafficking for synapses, so I pursued training as a cell biologist as an EMBO and Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Institut Curie in Paris (2007-2012). After the birth of my second son, I began grant writing and job hunting before starting an independent research group at NOVA Medical School in 2013, combining my knowledge of AD with my cell biological training. I have been supported by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), first by being selected internationally as a starting Investigator FCT and then as an Auxiliary Investigator (CEEC Ind 2017). In 2022, I was selected as Principal Investigator of iNOVA4Health, a translational medicine research unit. I secured funding and fellowships (more than 1 million euros) for the lab from the national FCT, the European Commission, and the American Alzheimer's Association and received several awards. I have also become involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, co-coordinate a master's in biomedical research, and won a teaching award. I also steer the scientific community by co-organizing local and national meetings and globally have been involved in AD research leadership for 20 years through Alzforum.org, invited to the top conferences (from the USA to Chile). I have made groundbreaking discoveries, including the role of beta-amyloid in AD and the involvement of actin dynamics and myosin1b in cargo exit from the trans-Golgi Network. My team has identified the impact of two Alzheimer's disease risk factors, Bin1 and CD2AP, on beta-amyloid accumulation and synapse dysfunction. Our research has advanced knowledge and opens new avenues for Alzheimer's disease therapy.
