João Canning-Clode serves as a Principal Investigator at two esteemed institutions: MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre and ARDITI - Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação. He was honored with the second edition of the FCT Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEECIND/03196/2018, though declined), and currently holds an award from the FCT Institutional Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEECINST/00098/2018). Additionally, João received recognition through the 2014 FCT Investigator Programme (IF/01606/2014/CP1230/CT0001). After graduating in Biology from the University of Madeira, Portugal, in 2005, João pursued his Ph.D. degree in Biological Oceanography and Marine Sciences at the prestigious GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, University of Kiel, Germany, completing it in 2008. His postdoctoral journey led him to the Marine Invasions Research Laboratory at the renowned Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Maryland, USA, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama City, Panama, from 2009 to 2011. Subsequently, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the Centre of IMAR of the University of the Azores and at MARE, Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, from 2012 to 2014. João possesses extensive expertise in marine biology, community ecology, marine biogeography, and invasion biology, with a primary focus on marine benthic communities. Since embarking on his academic journey, he has authored over 104 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 12 book chapters, and edited 1 book. Noteworthy publications have appeared in esteemed journals such as Nature, Nature Sustainability, Nature Ecology and Evolution, PLoS Biology, and others, amassing over 5141 citations with an h-index of 33 (i10-index of 71). Establishing his own research group in Madeira, João founded the Madeira Regional Research Unit of MARE, a research Center classified as an Excellent R & D Unit by FCT. Under his guidance, MARE-Madeira boasts a team of 65 researchers, including 21 PhDs. He has mentored 10 post-docs, 5 PhD students, and numerous undergraduates. In 2017, João initiated a fruitful collaboration with the Smithsonian Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO), resulting in the establishment of the first MarineGEO station in the North Atlantic and Europe. He has also played a pivotal role in numerous international projects, securing over 4 million euros in research grants and individual fellowships. João's research has garnered global media attention, with coverage in esteemed outlets such as CNN, BBC Four, and Forbes. With over 120 participations in international conferences and more than 60 invited presentations, including one at the European Parliament, João is a respected voice in his field. He serves as an Associate Editor for Aquatic Invasions and Frontiers in Marine Science, and as a reviewer for 30 international journals. Currently, João chairs the ICES Working Group on Introductions and Transfer of Marine Organisms and has been recognized as an Edinburgh Ocean Leader in 2023.
