Fernando Martínez Freiría is a evolutionary ecologist interested in the integrative understanding of phenotypic and genetic diversity and its application to conservation. He obtained a degree in biology (2002) from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and a master's degree (2004) and a doctorate (2009) from the University of Salamanca (Spain). He is currently a researcher hired at the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources from the University of Porto (CIBIO/InBIO, Portugal). The major aims of his research are to identify biogeographical patterns, explain determinant factors, and infer ecological and evolutionary processes, to incorporate resulting information in conservation assessments for biodiversity. He frequently uses ectotherms, particularly vipers, as model organisms, relying on a strong fieldwork component, the compilation of data from scientific collections and the application of spatially-based approaches to integrate ecological, climatic and genetic information at different geographic scales. His research uses a multidisciplinary toolbox that includes phylogenetics, phylogeography and population genetics to quantify genetic diversity and characterize evolutionary dynamics; GIS-based tools and multivariate statistics to quantify phenotypic variation, identify its geographic patterns and establish links among phenotypic, genetic and environmental variability; and SDM to identify the environmental requirements of species, lineages and populations, as well as to infer suitable areas for their occurrence across time. Independent Research line: along 8 years of post-doc (2010-19) and 5 years of Researcher (2019-24) in CIBIO/InBIO (Portugal), he gained solid background and multidisciplinary skills that allowed him to progressively create an independent line of research in evolutionary ecology, which translates into the current leadership of a research group at CIBIO (PhenEvol, https://cibio.up.pt/en/groups/phenotypic-evolution-phenevol/team); 2. Publication record: He has published 93 peer-reviewed SCI-articles (66 of them with IF). Publications include top-ranked journals as Biological Reviews, BMC Evolutionary Biology (2), Conservation Letters, Diversity & Distributions (4), Ecosystem Services, Journal of Biogeography (4), Molecular Ecology, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution (4), Plos One, Science of the Total Environment, Scientific Reports (3) and Toxins (2). He has also published 2 books, 11 book chapters and 8 electronic chapters in an Encyclopedia; 3. Active dissemination of research: He has contributed to international SCI-congresses with 114 communications (78 oral, 36 poster), provided 21 lectures by invitation in scientific and non-scientific forums, and participated in media interviews to divulgate the results of his research; 4. Advanced training of human resources: He has supervised >20 students from distinct countries and taught in 6 editions of an international course in a doctoral program (BIODIV, CIBIO/InBIO); 5. Successful research fund-raising: He has participated in >20 research grants and contracts, with >250K¿ raised as the PI/Co-PI; 6. Internationalisation of research: He has collaborated with >100 researchers from Europe, Asia and Africa, establishing solid collaborative networks with researchers from 16 institutions; 7. Organization of SCI-congresses and courses: He has been involved in the organization of 5 international congresses, 6 editions of 2 specialized courses and one workshop; 8. Evaluator in SCI-committees: He is Associate Editor of a wildlife electronic encyclopedia and the journals Amphibia-Reptilia and ANIMALS, and reviewer for major journals in his fields of expertise, for international grant assessment panels, and for academic MSc and PhD committees; 9. Member of conservation societies: He is an active member of five conservation societies that act at different geographic levels.
