After completing her MSc in Veterinary Medicine in Portugal (Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, 2012), Mariana Simões moved to the Netherlands to follow the MSc in Epidemiology at Utrecht University (concluded in 2015). She completed her PhD in Environmental Epidemiology in October 2023 at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS, Utrecht University), where she investigated the health effects of (modelled) exposure to agricultural pollutants among the Dutch rural population using large administrative dababases. She has published 10 peer-reviwed papers and supervised 3 Master students. She currently holds a postdoc position continuing her work on the effects of agricultural pollutants on health, namely the effect of pesticides exposure on Parkinson's disease and COPD/asthma incidence and the effect of livestock-related endotoxin exposure on the incidence and severity of COVID-19.
