Marlene Lages

Marlene Lages is a nutritionist and a research fellow (FCT PhD Scholarship 2021.07673.BD) at the Center for Innovative Care and Health Technology (ciTechCare), an R&D Unit from Polytechnic of Leiria (FCT/UI/05704/2020). She is currently enrolled in a PhD program at the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Science of the University of Porto. Her research areas and interests are mainly focused on clinical nutrition, metabolism diabetes, and, more recently, chrononutrition. In 2020, Marlene Lages won the Emilio Peres Award, sponsored by the Portuguese Society of Diabetology, to develop her project in the area of chrononutrition. She has published 12 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals, four of them as first author. During her research career, she has presented oral communications and posters at scientific conferences of great relevance in the area of nutrition and metabolic diseases, including, the European Congress on Obesity, the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the Annual Meeting of American Society for Nutrition and the European Congress of Physiology (Europhysiology). Marlene was a research fellow in a research project aimed at developing a new medical device for screening metabolic diseases, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, where she collaborated in the design of the clinical study, submission to the competent health authorities and data collection in clinical settings. She attended a course on Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Research Ethics and, in this course, she acquired skills and knowledge about the approval system for clinical trials/studies with medicines, medical devices and other health products in Portugal and Europe, regulatory requirements regarding data protection and contracts, ethical aspects of the participation of vulnerable populations in clinical research, fraud, misconduct and conflict of interests. She also has working experience in the area of Clinical Nutrition, having already worked as a nutritionist at the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (Coimbra, Portugal), as well as in the Primary Healthcare Centres of Alentejo Central (Évora, Portugal).
