Martim de Sousa Gil Cardeira completed a B.Sc. in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2016) at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias - Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a M.Sc. in Biotechnology (2018) at Instituto Superior Técnico - Universidade de Lisboa. Martim was a research fellow in iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica from 2019 until 2022, where he has studied the bioactive effects of natural extracts and compounds on several human cell lines. His research was focused in the extraction of bioactive compounds from natural matrixes, using green extraction technologies and posterior biochemical and biological characterization. Since January 2023, Martim pursued a more industry-related position at Sovena Portugal - Consumer Goods, S.A. Here, he does R&D focused in the valorisation of the residues generated by Sovena’s several olive oil facilities, aiming at the development of new products to be applied in food, nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Martim has lots of experience in animal cell culture and several different cell-based assays, including cytotoxicity, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activity evaluations with different cell lines, as well as permeability assays using a triple cell co-culture. Additionally, Martim has been involved in tasks related to green extraction techniques (Supercritical Fluids, Pressurized Liquid Extraction, NADES, Microwaves, Ultrasounds, etc.), crucial to obtain and understand the role of numerous bioactive compounds with health benefits (phenols, proteins, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, etc.) present in different natural matrices. He has participated in 8 articles in scientific journals, with one as first author.
