Manuela Carvalheiro graduated in Applied Chemistry/Biotechnology in 1991 (FCT, UNL), obtained her M.S. in Food Technology in 2001 (FCT, UNL) and completed her PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology in 2011 at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. Is currently Research Assistant in the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Health Technologies at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, and member of the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa). The scientific research area of expertise involves the design, development, and biological evaluation of Nanoparticulate Lipid-Based systems for the delivery of new chemical entities, already established chemotherapeutics and genetic drugs. The aim is to increase the therapeutic efficacy of the loaded drug, reduce their toxicity, and allow drug release at the specific site in a controlled manner. Research activity has been dedicated to the development and optimization of cost-effective lipid-based nanocarriers (liposomes, ethosomes, ultra-deformable vesicles, SLN, NLC), for selective intracellular macrophage delivery of active drugs for the treatment of Leishmania related infections exploring non-invasive routes of administration. Her work also includes the optimization of cells-based in vitro assays to assess the performance of colloidal systems in mammalian cells (cytotoxicity and internalization studies) and Leishmania parasites (susceptibility analysis of drug formulation) and establishment of animal models of human diseases for assessment of in vivo efficacy and safety. In the last few years she has been working towards the valorization of agri-food by-products through their incorporation in dermal formulations. More recently she has been involved in the establishment and optimization of a mice model of breast cancer brain metastasis for the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of new drug candidates. She has experience in coordinating research projects as a principal investigator and participates as a researcher in several funded projects. She has supervised PhD student, MSc students, Erasmus fellow and several undergraduate students in research work. Reviewer in international peer review journals.
