Patrícia Barros graduated in Biology in 2007 (University of Évora, Portugal) and in the same year, pursued her doctoral studies at the Oncobiology lab in the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA, Lisbon, Portugal) with a PhD scholarship from FCT. Her work was focused mainly on the impact of the dysregulation of signaling pathways controlled by the GTPase RAC1 in tumorigenesis, in particular, on gene transcription. An EMBO short-term fellowship allowed her to develop part of these studies in the Cancer Research lab at the Imperial College of London (London, UK), in collaboration with Prof. Eric W Lam. After finishing her PhD in Biology (Major in Molecular Biology from ITQB - University Nova of Lisboa, Portugal) in 2012, she continued this line of work as a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Biodiversity, Functional & Integrative Genomics (BioFIG, Lisbon). In 2014, she was awarded with an individual FCT post-doctoral fellowship to conduct her studies at the BioSystems & Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI, Lisbon) and INSA. Here, she characterized the role of RAC1 deregulated signaling in the modulation of the activity of the transcription factors STAT5 and BCL6, and its impact on the expression of genes involved in the chemoresistance of colorectal tumors. In addition, she contributed with her scientific and technical expertise to other ongoing projects in the host lab and to the development of a new research line, extending her studies to the regulation of ion channels, namely, to the delivery and retention at the plasma membrane of the chloride channel CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator). Currently, she integrates a permanent research position at INSA, where she focuses on the role of dysregulated signaling by small RHO GTPases in the context of cancer and other diseases with significant impact on public health, and to identify, among the effectors of these GTPases, new disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets for pharmacological modulation. She has proven experience in the supervision and co-supervision of MSc students and contributed over the years to the training of several MSc and PhD students in the host lab. Until now, she has published 12 papers in international, peer reviewed journals, out of a total of 15 international publications, reaching more than 170 citations and an h-index of 8. In addition, she has presented her work in several international scientific meetings, 7 of which as oral communications. She is member of 3 national and 1 international scientific organizations, has been invited to participate as opponent in academic committees, and as reviewer for international journals.
