Cláudia Saraiva was granted a PhD in Bioengineering (MIT-Portugal) from the New University of Lisbon. During her thesis, she used microRNA-loaded nanoparticles (miR-NP) as therapeutic agents to promote neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells and consequently ameliorate brain damage in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and stroke models. Her PhD project provided evidence supporting miR-124 NP as positive modulators of endogenous neurogenesis and their potential application in brain repair strategies. This work was developed at the Health Science Research Center (CICS), University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal under the supervision of Dr. Liliana Bernardino and co-supervision of Dr. Lino Ferreira, two leading investigators in the fields of neural stem cells and biomaterials. Part of the PhD work regarding stroke was developed at the Laboratory for Experimental Brain Research, Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, Lund University under the supervision of Dr. Karsten Ruscher. After, she joined Prof. Jens Schwamborn lab at the Luxembourg Centre for System Biomedicine, where she contributed to the further development of human iPSC-derived organoids to model PD (e.g. immunocompetent midbrain organoids) as well as for the phenotypic characterization of familial PD using patient-specific iPSC-derived midbrain organoids. During this period, Cláudia was the lead scientist (PI) on a funded project that used human midbrain organoids derived from iPSCs from PD patients to disclose the role of the Miro1 protein on PD pathology, namely in terms of mitochondria dysfunctional and dopaminergic neuron degeneration. Cláudia aims to continually grow her expertise in the stem cell field and contribute to a better understanding of PD pathology as well as in the development of 3D brain models.
