Cláudia Fançony is a category C researcher, involved in the writing of biomedical research projects, active search for funding, implementation of research projects, knowledge transfer and scientific communication. She has a degree in Applied Biology and a Master in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, both from the University of Minho. She also holds a PhD in Public Health from the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (Portugal). Cláudia is the former Scientific Coordinator of the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Angola (CISA), currently Principal Investigator at CISA and Assistant Researcher at the Instituto de Investigação em Ciências da Vida e Saúde (ICVS). She is mainly interested in studying the response of P. falciparum to antimalarial drugs being used by National Malaria Control Programmes (in vitro and ex vivo), to new drugs already approved, to antimalarial compounds under development and to plant extracts, and in studying the molecular mechanisms used by the parasite to evade antimalarial drugs. She is currently the PI of 3 projects, aiming respectivelly at: 1) studying the opposing forces exerted by two drugs on a single target of the malaria parasite (funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation), 2) validating an ex vivo drug assay to determine the potency of reference compounds against P. falciparum (funded by the Medicines for Malaria Venture) and 3) studying the antimalarial potential of endemic plants in Angola (funded by the Angolan Foundation for Scientific and Technological Development). Her contribution to the Angolan scientific system was recognised with the 2022 Woman of Merit Award in the research category, presented by the Angolan Ministry of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women.
