I am a geologist, specialised in the fields of geochemistry and geochronology. I have a keen interest in understanding how we can use mineral proxies to infer about geodynamic conditions. During my PhD I have worked mainly with the mineral rutile, which survives considerable transport in the water environment and therefore can be retrieved from sedimentary rocks and inform about its source. I have also developed an interest in understanding what mechanisms can influence the preservation of the initial elemental and isotopic composition in rutile. The main purpose of my research is to use this mineral to assess metamorphic conditions that have affected the crust through time, even if those metamorphic rocks are no longer exposed, i.e. from detrital grains. In my postdoc, I worked on placing new constraints on the stability of rutile and titanite (another Ti-bearing mineral) in mafic rocks (which are most abundant in the oceanic slab), to see which mineral (rutile or titanite) is a better proxy to track cold subduction. I equally worked on developing thermobarometric tools applied to these minerals, to enable us to probe the metamorphic record using single detrital grains. Since 2022 I am a FCT CEEC-IND Fellow, and I intend to apply the tools that I have been developing, together with those of others, to retrieve meaningful P-T-t information from detrital minerals of Precambrian age and continue to work on placing further constraints on the age of onset of modern plate tectonics. I was awarded an ERC starting grant for the projet FINGERprinting cold subduction and Plate Tectonics using key minerals, starting in May 2024, to develop thermobarometric tools and apply them to the detrital mineral record. In the last 5 years I have been a referee of more than 10 articles in Q1 journals, I co-edited a special publication volume for the Geological Society of London and I supported the scientific community by serving in different specialty committees.
