Sergi Pérez-Jorge is a contracted Junior Researcher at IMAR investigating the foraging ecology of marine megafauna through the use of bioenergetics and distribution models. Over the last five years, his research has focused on modelling the distribution, behaviour and vertical movements of megafauna based on visual and animal-borne tag observations, understanding the megafauna-prey spatial interactions, and applying this knowledge to management contexts. In 2017, I started working at IMAR investigating the spatial and movement ecology of marine top predators and their links with various ecosystem components. This research provided the most detailed information on the spatio-temporal distribution of three species of baleen whales in the North Atlantic, and the showed the relevance of prey biomass for the movement of the species  (Pérez-Jorge et al., 2020). The experience gained on this study was used to assess the importance of two remote Atlantic seamounts as foraging hotspots, using acoustic data in relation to regional oceanography and estimates of prey biomass (Romagosa et al., 2020). These previous studies showed that incorporating the novel modelled prey data allowed to shorten the lags between predictors and predators, helping to reduce the possible spatial mismatch between predictor and response variables and representing a more direct biological relationship. In 2018, I was involved on the implementation of open robust design models using opportunistic data, providing robust estimates of demographic parameters of the sperm whale population inhabiting the Azores (Boys et al., 2019). Additionally, I estimated the cumulative exposure of whale-watching boats on this sperm whale population (Mandl, 2018). Since 2019, I has been investigating predator-prey interactions, particularly on energy transfer and the consequences of prey removal from the ecosystem under changing environmental conditions within the scope of the SUMMER project. I has also been quantifying the energetic requirements of key marine top predators with different feeding strategies using new bioenergetics modelling techniques, and evaluating the ecological role of mesopelagic species for marine top predators under different harvesting scenarios. During these years, I authored a total of 18 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Diversity and Distribution and Proceedings of the Royal Society, and 1 book chapter. These publications have addressed a range of topics from fine-scale ecology of top predators up to assessing the marine mammal interactions with fisheries. Supervised 4 Bsc and 2 Msc students, and currently supervising 2 Msc and 2 PhD students. Member of the Scientific Committee of my Research Institution, and scientific reviewer in six peer-review journals. Participated as national delegate of the Portuguese delegation at the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), and member of the Africa-Focused Sousa Task Team of the IWC

2016/07 - 2017/03 Abundance and residence patterns of bottlenose dolphin inhabiting Watamu National Marine Reserve (NMR). The study provided the first abundance estimates, residency patterns and home range of Tursiops aduncus inhabiting Watamu NMR. Given that there was no previous data on abundance estimates of the T.aduncus these results can be used as a baseline from which to monitor the population. T.aduncus inhabiting the study area, which faces intense destructive fishing and unsustainable tourism practise that pose a threat to this resident population.

2013/10 - 2014/06 Spatio-temporal distribution of sea turtles in Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Protected Area. The study revealed that sea turtles were distributed around KMMPA, identifying Kisite Island, Mpunguti reserve and Wasini channel as the main hotspots. The results also showed that KMMPA provides a good habitat for Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) throughout the year based on their feeding and resting rates around the study area.

2013/10 - 2014/04 Assessing the feasibility to conduct marine mammal research from tourist dhows around Marine mammals' data collected from tourist dhows was compared to data collected onboard a research boat (RB) during the same study period around KMMPA. No significant differences were encountered on species, behavior, time of sightings and group sizes between the RB and TD, showing the possibility of using tourist dhows as research platform on the study area.
