Cláudia Alexandra dos Santos Valente de Castro graduated in Chemical Engineering - Biotechnology area - in 1997 by Instituto Superior Técnico Universidade de Lisboa (IST). In 1996, she was a visiting student, under ERASMUS Programme, in University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2003, she concluded the PhD in Biotechnology in IST, having worked in the Department of Bioengineering of IST and University of Maryland in Baltimore County (UMBC) in the United States of America. She concluded her first post-doctoral study in Developmental Biology in 2007 and the second one in Neurosciences in 2010, with grants from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). Currently, Cláudia is a tenure researcher at the Instituto de Farmacologia e Neurociências at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL) where she coordinates the group Neurobiology of Inflammation and Neurodegeneration (NeuroID). She is also an invited professor at FMUL with participation in both undergraduate (Medical Degree) and postgraduate (Neuroscience Master/PhD Programme) courses. Her research group explores neuroinflammatory pathways as novel therapeutic targets to hamper brain pathologies, such as Epilepsy and Alzheimer's Disease. In her research she uses in vitro (primary cultures of neurons, astrocytes and microglia) and ex vivo models (organotypic and acute slices) coupled to several genomic and proteomic methodologies, as qPCR, western blot, immunocytochemistry/immunohistochemistry assays coupled to confocal microscopy and electrophysiological recordings, together with statistical analysis and data processing in specific computer softwares (eg. GraphPad Prism, ImageJ, Image Lab, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Clampfit). Cláudia has multiple peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals (mostly as senior author) and over 850 citations. She participated in 12 Research Projects, being the leader of the Work Packages on neuroinflammation, and coordinated the organization of scientific events. She is also a referee in Master/Doctoral theses and has vast experience in the scientific refereeing of articles. Her proficiency in mentoring is evidenced by the successful completion of PhD thesis (2), master's theses (over 25) and international internships (over 30), from both pre-graduate and post-graduate programs at universities throughout Portugal. Additionally, she has presented numerous invited lectures and findings from her research group have been shared through oral communications and posters at both national and international conferences (over 100). Cláudia and her research group participate actively in science dissemination activities.
