Susana Isabel dos Santos Silva Sério Venceslau

Susana Sério (S. Sério) earned her degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon in 1996. She completed a Master’s in Science and Surface Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Nova University of Lisbon (FCT/NOVA) in 1998, followed by a PhD in Physics, specializing in Condensed Matter Physics, from the University of Lisbon in 2004. From October 2004 to January 2008, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear. Between February 2008 and January 2013, she served as an Assistant Researcher under the Ciência 2007 program at CEFITEC, FCT/NOVA. From March 2013 to September 2018, she held the position of Invited Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at FCT/NOVA. Since October 2018, she has been an Assistant Professor at the same institution. At FCT/UNL, S. Sério teaches a variety of courses, including Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Solid State Physics, Surface and Interfaces Technology, Techniques for Characterization of Materials and Surfaces, and Technology of Plasmas and Thin Films. To date, she has published 70 works, consisting of 49 articles in international scientific journals, 14 conference papers, 6 book chapters, and 1 edited book. Her research has earned 655 citations, and she holds a h-index of 15 according to ISI Web of Knowledge data. She has delivered more than 90 presentations at national and international conferences. S. Sério has supervised 1 PhD student (completed in February 2021), co-supervised 24 MSc students, and mentored 1 undergraduate student. She is currently supervising 1 MSc student in Biomedical Engineering and 1 PhD student since 2022. She contributed to the core teaching team of the international RABBIT Doctoral Training Programme (FCT/MEC, PD/00193/2012) at FCT/NOVA. Throughout her career, she was principal investigator of 1 funded by the EU’s Improving Human Potential Programme during her PhD, and in 2015, S. Sério led a project with Aarhus University, supported by the EU. She has also participated as team member in 3 EU-funded FP7 projects (ELISA) and 7 projects financed by FCT. Her international research activities include serving as the National Delegate and Member of the scientific and steering committee for the CMST COST Action TD1208, Electrical Discharges with Liquids for Future Applications, and coordinating Short Term Scientific Missions. She is also the National Delegate and Member of the steering committee for COST Action CA20114, focused on Therapeutic Applications of Cold Plasmas, and is responsible for Grant Awarding Coordination. S. Sério has contributed to the organization of multiple conferences, including co-chairing the 1st Annual Meeting of COST Action TD1208 in Lisbon in 2014 and chairing the 1st Training School of COST Action CA20114 at FCT NOVA in February 2022. She was a member of the organizing committees for POSMOL 2015, PHOTOPTICS 2015, PHOTOPTICS 2016, CIBB 2018, EUSpec 2018 and all meetings and training schools of COST Action CA20114. She was member of the coordinating board of CEFITEC from 2008 to 2015 and led the Plasmas and Applications research group at CEFITEC from January 2015 to March 2020. In May 2021, she joined the Laboratory for Instrumentation, Biomedical Engineering, and Radiation Physics (LIBPhys) and now leads the Plasmas and Applications research group. She was guest editor of 2 special issues in Coatings, an open-access journal by MDPI. Additionally, S. Sério serves as a reviewer for over 22 international journals. Her current research interests focus on the electric, structural, morphological, and optical properties of thin films produced by magnetron sputtering, as well as nanotechnology, solar cell architectures, photonics, sensors, and photocatalysts. She is particularly dedicated to the development of cold atmospheric plasma devices for medical applications and eco-friendly solutions for the pollution in water and air.
