Tiago Santos is a Researcher at the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, PT. CDRSP is dedicated either to biomedical applications and tissue regeneration, and to the transformation of the manufacturing industry through the development and implementation of novel Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies. He completed his PhD in Physics Engineering in 2020 from the University of Aveiro Department of Physics, Master in Physics Engineering in 2008 from the University of Aveiro Department of Physics. His PhD is entitled “Método alternativo baseado em radiação de micro-ondas para processamento térmico de materiais” (Alternative method based on microwave radiation for termal processing of materials). He has published several articles in specialized peer-reviewed journals, published 1 book chapter [Forthcoming (April 2022)], has two registered patent(s), participated as a Research Fellow in 3 project(s), and as a Junior Researcher in 2 projects, was co-supervision of the graduation project entitled “Imagiologia de fenómenos térmicos com câmara de infravermelhos” (Imaging of thermal phenomena with infrared camera). He participated in the research project “Facing the challenges of characterizing novel thermal materials and processes (Heat@UA)”, having carried out modeling and computational simulation of fluidic, magnetic, and thermal processes and systems. The simulation results were complemented with those obtained by the analysis of thermal processes, using infrared thermography. Within the scope of the SGH – SMART GREEN HOMES project, reference SGH/CICECO-UA/139-02/2017, n.º7678, skills were acquired in magnetic heat pumps, more specifically in the area of simulation using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. He carried out complementary work on thermal characterization of materials with thermomagnetic properties. His main research activity and interests focus mostly on microwave processing of materials, with emphasis on clay-based ceramics like porcelain and stoneware. He had participated as a research fellow in two industrial projects (Greenwave and CerWave research projects) aiming at the construction of a microwave hybrid furnace for porcelain firing. He was responsible for several tasks, including simulation studies and construction of a laboratory microwave furnace for porcelain firing; cooperation in the development of a tunnel industrial kiln (that uses a hybrid firing system (gas + microwave)) for porcelain firing. Among other tasks, he was responsible for the optimization of the tunnel kiln control automaton system and firing tests. Currently, his interests are mostly focused on microwave sintering of bioceramics for bone tissue regeneration.
