Ana Beatriz Duarte is a researcher and communication professional. She holds an MA in Social History (PUC-Rio), where she was granted a scholarship, and a BA in Journalism from one of the best universities in Brazil (UFRJ), where she graduated with a cum laude degree. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for 20th Century Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Coimbra, with a research stay at Costech lab, Université de Technologie de Compiègne. She has devoted most of her 25-year career to acting in the first, second and third sectors, in Brazil and the UK, with human rights and public security policies and technology. She has performed different roles, from writer and editor to press officer and coordinator, with employers spanning from the UN to governments and research institutes. Among other activities, she wrote projects and dissemination plans, edited publications, and organized events. She has also made oral presentations at public events. Ana masters four languages, and has strong IT skills. She has taught English classes, and published translations, such as the seminal paper ¿Accounts¿, by Scott and Lyman, and a book by David Graeber. For the last few years, she has been transitioning into a full-time research career. She has joined the research consortium InterAgency Institute, where she is part of the Editorial Board and leads a project about artificial-intelligence-based weapons, to be funded by a group of civic organizations. Besides, she is a member of the Permanent Seminar on Artificial Intelligence group, led by UFRJ Communication School. She is also part of the editorial committee for the IAlgo+ booklet, part of Lugar Comum academic journal. Finally, she has just been accepted as a collaborating researcher at Ceis20, University of Coimbra. She has recently undertaken classes on the philosophy of technology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and follows the Advanced Seminar of Discourse Studies at the Center of Discourse Studies (Barcelona). Ana Duarte is the (co-)author of several publications (In Portuguese and English), such as 3 books (1 derived from her Master's thesis, published in five languages); 2 papers in peer-reviewed journals; 1 book review in an academic journal; 2 book reviews in newspapers; 2 reports; several art reviews, news stories, interviews, and scripts. She has (co-)edited/organized 2 books and 1 catalog. She has also been one of the curators of an art exhibition. For more than ten years, she has been a copy editor (In Portuguese and Spanish) for the academic journal Dilemas (UFRJ). She has recently presented a working paper at Congreso Internacional Dinámicas de la Relación Sur-Sur, at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She has been a speaker at Fundamental Rights Forum 2021, organized by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, and a mediator at the Humanitarian Partnerships and Networks Weeks 2021, by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Besides, she has presented her research project at events/groups at Open University UK, UFRJ, and the Centre of Discourse Studies in Barcelona (due in April 2022).
