Francisca Monteiro is a Ph.D. student and researcher at the Center for MicroElectroMechanical Systems (CMEMS) and at the ICVS/3B’s - PT Government Associate Laboratory (University of Minho). She worked on a research project dedicated to the design, manufacturing, and mechanical/biological characterization of implant devices for medical applications from July 2019 to August 2020. FCT has funded her Ph.D. project since September 2020 and it comprises the study of the synergistic effect of light and mechanical stimuli to implement in a transcranial stimulation device designed to improve Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. In the scope of this project, she was the first author of two published systematic reviews regarding the application of the abovementioned stimuli against AD neuropathological features. Francisca has also participated in various collaborations. She is currently working on the optimization of photobiomodulation and ultrasound stimulation protocols to block AD pathomechanisms in vitro. Meanwhile, she participated in multiple international conferences, including the 4th International Brain Stimulation Conference (Charleston, USA), and the 23rd Annual International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound (Taipei, Taiwan), among others. Francisca concluded her Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2019 at the Catholic University of Portugal - Faculty of Biotechnology, and her Degree in Bioengineering in 2016 at the same institution, completing both graduations with optimal success.
