Raquel Boia (RB) is a researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Coimbra (FMUC), which is part of CIBB (Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology), University of Coimbra (UC). Raquel Boia is graduated in Biochemistry and concluded her MSc degree in Biochemistry, in 2013, aiming to unravel the potential of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation control as a therapeutic strategy for retinal neuroprotection in experimental models of glaucoma. Then, she was a research fellow in a FCT-funded project (PTDC/BIM-MEC/0913/2012). Afterward, she was granted a PhD fellowship (FCT, PD/BD/114115/2015) in the Inter-University Doctoral Program in Ageing and Chronic Diseases of UC. She studied the therapeutic benefits of the adenosine A3 receptor (A3R) agonist to retinal ganglion cells neuroprotection, identifying a potential treatment for vision loss in glaucoma. These years’ work culminated in several publications, in which her publication Boia et al, 2022, J Control Release, IF: 11.467 was selected to be featured in the cover, March 2022, after Editor-in-chief invitation, and it was identified as a Top 1-5% published scientific paper for UC. RB research outputs include 24 publications in leading peer-reviewed journals (7 as first author), with an average IF of 5.7, h-index of 16 and more than 820 citations (as of February 2024). All of her contributions to this scientific field culminated in the award in the Innovators category by The IAPB - Eye Health Hero Programme in 2021, which is a recognition based on her contribution in aiding vision and restoring sight all around the globe as an Innovator. Moreover, she was awarded the Prize L'Oréal Portugal Medals of Honor for Women in Science 2022, with the project “A new therapeutic approach to leverage vision restoration in glaucoma”. RB has been involved in scientific projects as, i) PI: L'Oréal Portugal Medals of Honor for Women in Science 2022; ii) TEAM MEMBER: 8 grants (3 awarded by FCT - 1 is an ongoing project; 1 funded by Bayer HealthCare; 3 funded by the FMUC and 1 funded by Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro, Lda). The activities of academic supervision and guidance are reflected in, i) SUPERVISION: 4 master students (3 ongoing), 11 undergraduate students, 1 scholarship holder, 2 Summer Internships at UC and 4 elementary school students from summer internship program “Ciência Viva no Laboratório”; ii) GUIDANCE: 1 international Post-Doc during the stay in Portugal, 6 PhD students during Lab rotations, 5 master students, 10 undergraduate students and 1 scholarship holder. Her teaching activities are reflected in: laboratorial tutor of the Advanced Course in Vision Sciences from the PhD program in Health Sciences and of the Course of Sciences in Laboratory Animals, lectures in the Advanced Course in Vision Sciences of the PhD Programme in Health Sciences of FMUC; main examiner in a jury of Bsc degree and Msc thesis. Moreover, RB contributions are also reflected in 15 published abstracts from scientific meetings and 1 proceeding of international conference, 36 oral communications (12 as invited/presenting author), 80 poster presentations (as author/co-author). RB has also been participating as guest editor in several special issues, and to note the one from Frontiers in Neuroscience entitled “Molecular and cellular players of axonal regeneration in injured CNS”. She acted as a reviewer for Acta Biomaterialia; Molecular Neurobiology; Biomedicine Hub; Cells; IJMS; Journal of Clinical Medicine; Journal of Ophthalmology and Nutrients. RB has been actively participating in outreach science activities: World Sight Day, Brain Awareness Week and European Researchers Night. She is also team member of a science communication project Talk Neuro to Me (“Fala-me Neuro” in Portuguese) which is committed to foster neuroscience literacy and fight misinformation in the Portuguese community.
