Steve Howdle has pioneered the use of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) in polymer science, particularly in the development of surfactants; developing novel nanostructured materials; and application in tissue engineering and drug delivery. His work is highly interdisciplinary, spanning the interfaces of chemistry/life sciences, chemistry/materials science and chemistry/engineering. His impact includes high quality publications and commercial applications with achievements including: (i) using scCO2 to encapsulate thermally sensitive pharmaceuticals and even living cells into polymers; (ii) the first use of surfactants to create inverse aqueous micelles in scCO 2 and (iii) demonstration of several different techniques for controlled polymerisation in scCO2 including dispersion, RAFT and enzyme catalysed and (iv) the development of new hierarchical nanostructured materials. He has an h-index of 72 and > 15700 citations; high values for his field and all achieved without publishing lengthy reviews. Steve has played a strong leadership role in the chemistry/polymer community as Chair of the RSC/SCI MacroGroup; founder of the still flourishing RAPS Network (formed in 2000), and as a Council member of the UK’s High Polymer Research Group. He has also contributed as an active member of the EPSRC Physical Sciences SAT and contributed to EPSRC led International Reviews of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He is currently the Head of School at Nottingham and is a proactive member of HCUK helping the RSC cope with the pandemic and its effects on both our students and research.
