I am a Professor of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia, and the core goal of my research program is to develop theory-driven interventions that are designed to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare and health and promote social equity. As a social/health psychologist, I integrate social psychology theories of intergroup bias to health research and examine how stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination contribute to disparities in health and healthcare. With multiple NIH-funded projects as PI and Co-I, I delve deeply into the dynamics of provider bias and its impact on racial disparities in patient-provider communication across various clinical settings. Particularly, I utilize mixed methods research designs to investigate the nature of social issues as experienced by individuals in more culturally sensitive manners. Over the last several years, I have led multiple NIH-funded projects focused on healthcare providers’ implicit and explicit prejudice and collaborated with teams of multi-disciplinary researchers (practicing clinicians, genetic epidemiologists, clinical psychologists, social psychologists, communication researchers, etc.). I have published a number of peer-reviewed manuscripts in flagship journals in the last 15 years, including The Lancet and JAMA Network.
