Graduated with the Civil Engineer degree in 2007 by the University of Aveiro (Portugal), Romain Sousa focused his higher education in the field of Earthquake Engineering, attending the Erasmus Mundus Master in Earthquake Engineering organised by a consortium of institutions in Europe, namely the University of Patras (Greece) and the University Institute for Advanced Studies in Pavia (Italy), where he attended post graduated courses and present is Master thesis in 2010. More recently, in 2015, he obtained the PhD degree in Earthquake Engineering and Seismology at the University Institute for Advanced Studies in Pavia (Italy). In addition, whilst in Pavia, Romain also coordinated a 12-months research programme at the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE), involving a team of 5 researchers carrying out a deep and thorough parametric study on the use of Nonlinear Static Procedures for seismic assessment of real 3D structural models. After receiving the doctoral degree he received a grant from the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Lisbon and the Portuguese Society for Civil Engineering (SPES) to conduce a study aiming to develop and calibrate a nouvelle expedite methodology that represents a breakthrough with respect to conventional detailed and expedite methods for the seismic assessment of existing buildings. The merits of these methods are currently recognized in the Portuguese legislation that enables the use of these methods as alternative to the ones prescribed in the seismic code in practice (EC8 - Part 3). During its stay in LNEC (2016-2018) he also collaborate in experimental shake table tests and in the development of seismic risk studies both at the building and regional scale. The latter aimed to propose new fragility functions for pre-code reinforced concrete buildings and to identify optimised cost-effective retrofitting solutions. Since 2019 he is Assistant Researcher at the Civil Engineering Department of the Polytechnic of Leiria (IPLeiria) and member of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP), in Portugal. He has been particularly engaged in the seismic risk of existing precast buildings and proposal of innovative and sustainable retrofitting solutions. Among other scientific, academic and experimental activities, he maintains a close collaboration with the nearby municipalities, participating in the preparation of technical reports addressing structural issues in public infrastructures such as buildings, bridges or cultural monuments. The proximity with an academic institution (IPLeiria) has also offered opportunities to progressively become more active in supervising research activities, from Master and PhD students. Romain Sousa is author of more than 50 scientific and technical documents on several areas of his interest such as development and optimisation of numerical modelling solutions, structural assessment or seismic risk analysis. Alongside, he organised open classrooms and taught graduate and short courses on numerical modelling and seismic design and assessment of existing buildings. He participated in the organization of scientific events as chair, member of the executive and scientific committees. Finally he has been actively promoting the cooperation between the IPLeiria and private construction companies to approach the scientific developments to the real economy and attract funds to develop innovative projects in the prefabrication and automation in construction areas.
