Gonçalo Correia Lopes was born on 1990 in Praia da Luz, Lagos. He has a master degree and a PhD in Nautical, Underwater and
Maritime Archaeology, both from the NOVA FCSH, Lisbon. His PhD thesis, with the subject "Boa Vista 1: an archaeological study
of an Early Modern ship in Lisbon riverfront (17th-18th centuries)", focused on nautical archaeology and shipbuilding traditions
from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Since 2013 he is a researcher at CHAM (Centre for the Humanities), NOVA FCSH. His
research is centred in the Early Modern shipbuilding traditions. He has also integrated national and international research
projects about Portuguese Expansion in North Africa, namely Morocco and Ceuta. In parallel he has coordinated and participated
in several urban archaeology excavations, mainly preventive and rescue contexts. He was a senior technician on the Cultural
Heritage, Public Institute, namely on the Nautical and Underwater Archaeology National Centre (CNANS). In 2023/24, he won
the FCT's Individual Competition to Stimulate Scientific Employment (CEEC) and joined the Centre for Archaeology, Arts and
Heritage Sciences (CEAACP), namely the University of the Algarve hub. Presently, he is engaged in the execution of his CEEC
project, funded by the FCT, entitled "MUCH Lagos: Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage of Lagos" and, at the same time,
he is a highly regarded academic instructor, delivering lectures and seminars at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral
levels. His areas of expertise include Maritime and Underwater Archaeology and Coastal Heritage.
