Manuela Ferreira earned her licenciatura degree in Biochemistry and completed her PhD in 2010 at Coimbra University under the supervision of Fiona M. Watt (CRUK). Subsequently, she conducted postdoctoral research in the lab of Henrique Veiga-Fernandes at iMM and Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon until 2020. Following this, she established her laboratory at the Centro de Inovação em Biomedicina e Biotecnologia (CIBB) at Coimbra University. Currently, she leads a team of post-docs, FCT-funded PhD and MSc students, focusing on investigating the impact of environmental cues on immune cells and mucosal body barriers. In 2021, Ferreira was awarded a 6-year Assistant Researcher Grant through the FCT CEECIND program, and she further received the La Caixa Research Grant and an R&D FCT Grant in 2023. Despite encountering three career interruptions due to maternity leaves and illness between 2014 and 2019, Ferreira has authored until now a total of 14 papers, including six as the first author and one senior-corresponding author. Her research has amassed over 2000 citations, with a CIF of 168 and an h-index of 10, and has been published in esteemed journals such as Science, Cell, Nature, Genes & Development, and Cancer Research.

  1. EarlyMYCO project - Early-life exposure to mycotoxins: a neglected issue?. Recent studies under MYCOMIX project reported that Portuguese children until 3 years old are exposed to multiple mycotoxins through food consumption, constituting a potential health threat. Aflatoxins (carcinogenic toxins) represented the main risk contributors and deoxynivalenol (a non-carcinogenic toxin associated with immunological and gastrointestinal toxic effects) showed the highest daily in. 2019.
