Raquel Faria de Deus

Raquel Faria de Deus is a researcher at CICS.NOVA, in the Modelling and Planning Systems group and an invited assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, both undergraduate and graduate levels, in the areas of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. She holds a PhD in Geography and Territorial Planning - specialization in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (2015), a MSc in Geographic Information Systems, from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (2008), and a Degree in Geography from Universidade de Coimbra (2002). Between 2010 and 2014, she received a scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal) to develop her PhD studies on GIS-based modelling of land-use and land-cover (LULC) change in coastal areas. She has also received an award for the best PhD thesis (2015-2016), the National Prize of Geography Orlando Ribeiro, from the Portuguese Association of Geographers. She has gained valuable professional experience as a GIS expert at the state company Parques de Sintra-Monte da Lua, S.A. (2017-2019), the Portimão municipality (2009-2010), and the Aljezur municipality (2007-2008). She served as a member of organizing committee of scientific conferences, and workshops on spatial modelling. She carries out research in the areas of land-change science, spatial planning, and spatial modelling. More recently, she is focused on LULC change trajectories, sustainable LULC change, participatory planning approaches, and scenario building. She has published the research results in international peer-review journals such as the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Computer Science, and book chapters. Recently, she was guest editor of the special issue on "Smart Spatial Planning" of the journal "Sustainability".
