Daniel Pedrosa da Silva is a mechanical engineer who has been working in the past years as a research fellow at the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development - Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, and later as a head technician in PIEP - Centre for Innovation in Polymer Engineering. He has an MSc degree from the University of Coimbra (obtained in July 2015) and started his R&D journey in 2017, after his first industrial work experiences in the field of production and project. Beginning in September 2015, he worked as a production planning assistant in the injection molding company Portumolde - Iberomoldes Group, where he gained first-hand knowledge of the regional industry. Later, in 2017, he enrolled in a new challenge in the aeronautics company OGMA - Embraer Group, where he had the opportunity to work as an aircraft maintenance planner of civil aviation. As a researcher, he has contributed to the development of projects related to 3D printing, injection molding, and material characterization, as well as working on other relevant tasks involving prototyping, reverse engineering, and the Internet of Things. The outputs of the work performed in collaboration with the ALBA synchrotron guided him to enroll in a doctoral program in materials science. It began in 2022, within a partnership between this institution, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and CDRSP-IPLeiria. In the context of an exploratory project, he enrolled in an exchange experience at MIT, integrating a computer simulation team for approximately 3 months, developing work in the field of molecular dynamics simulations applied to 3D printing. The learnings in the field of polymers were then relevant to move to a more technical role in polymer processing in PIEP, namely in injection moulding, but also involving some stages of extrusion. As part of his routine, he gained some knowledge and experience on the operation (production and maintenance) of heavier machinery, and the adjustment of process parameters for specific polymers and geometries in real-time.
