Raquel Benavides

I am a forest ecologist interested in the responses of forests to global change, drawing on different approaches and methods. I obtained my Doctorate at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (2008) thanks to a FPI fellowship. My research at the Servicio Regional de Investigación y Desarrollo del Principado de Asturias addressed the design and establishment of sustainable silvopastoral systems in mountainous areas, a key management strategy for landscape conservation in those areas. Afterwards, my research interests shifted towards Forest Ecology and I initiated new research lines that I have performed in different institutions (CIFOR-INIA, MNCN-CSIC, Universität Freiburg -Germany-, Centro de Estudos Florestais, CEF-ISI -Portugal-). One line aims at analysing recruitment, growth and mortality patterns of dominant forest tree species along climatic gradients, considering their interaction with local environmental heterogeneity. A second trait-based approach pursues the species phenotypic variability and its implications on the ecosystem functioning (e.g. species coexistence or ecosystem services delivery). Communities with higher functional diversity (including the intraspecific component) are expected to provide greater multifunctionality and have a higher stability and resilience under global change scenarios. I recently gained new support to this line with an Assistant Researcher position (2020-2026) at the CEF-ISI in Lisbon (Fundaçao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, FCT). These two complementary approaches can provide crucial knowledge for adaptive management actions in forests. My research is multidisciplinary and collaborative (co-authors from 20 countries) and so far resulted in 2 book chapters and 41 publications in peer-reviewed journals -39 in SCI journals-, most of them in top journals (82% in Q1, 44% in D1) that accumulates 1571 citations (h-index=21, GS). I have participated in 14 projects funded by international and national bodies, and earned funding for my own research lines (Marie Curie IEF, FTC call). I have supervised 2 doctoral theses, 3 MSc theses and 3 BSc theses. I have been member of scientific committees in 2 conferences, session convener in an international congress and I have evaluated projects for international calls. I am a regular reviewer of diverse journals, Editor of Plants and Editor Junior of Ecologia Austral. I make special effort in knowledge transfer and dissemination, with 44 contributions to national and international congresses, regular press releases and participation in outreach events. I was on maternity leave in Jun2014-Sep2015 and Oct2017-Feb2018 (20 months in total).
