Nádia E. Santos received her Biochemistry degree from the University of Aveiro (UA) in 2016 and masters in biotechnology from the same institution in 2017, having, since then, devoted her professional life to Medicinal Chemistry. During her bachelors degree, she developed research on ruthenium complexes with 3,5-disubstitited pyrazoles for cytotoxic activity. The topic was further developed in her masters thesis, during which she identified a few complexes with activity against stomach cancer cell lines. The masters helped Nadia improve her skills in both organic and inorganic chemistry and in characterisation methods such as NMR, MS and FTIR. She further pursued her keen interest in drug development during a one-year research internship in the medicinal chemistry department of Bial where she learned how to search and design new compounds, interpret NMR results, and discuss structure-activity relationship. She prepared a library of proprietary drug candidates that for subsequent testing at Bial's biology department. Working in a team with various international members, she strengthened her command in English. Language skills were regularly use in the monthly meetings of the Medicinal Chemistry group, which had English as official language. Presently, Nádia is back to academic research, working with the Bioplus project: Development of diamond-optic fibre biosensors for detection of IgE. Merging optoelectronics with organic and analytical chemistry, this interdisciplinary project has constantly pushed her to develop and deepen her skills and to learn new concepts and techniques (SEM, powder X-Ray diffraction, Raman, XPS). Outcomes of the first six months with Bioplus include one poster presentation on surface functionalisation of diamond by photochemical grafting, recently presented in the 13th Inorganic & Bioinorganic Chemistry Conference of SPQ, and a background review paper on diamond sensors for biomolecules in the journal "Applied Sciences". Production: Nádia authored four SCI-indexed papers, one bookchapter, and presented three posters in national/international conferences. Science dissemination: Nádia authored one science dissemination paper (in "Boletim da Sociedade Portuguesa da Química"). She participated in a science communication contest called "Famelab", having qualified as a semifinalist (top10). She gave an interview on her participation at Famelab in 2017 at the radio show "Click" in Antena 1 RTP. In 2018, she was a science communication coach at the soft skills workshop cycle organized by UA¿s "Núcleo de Estudantes de Química ".
