Hugo Cruz in the 16th of February 2024 started working as a staff Researcher in the project - characterization of black mass and electrical characterization-RRP-12.43.16.2/2 at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory under the supervision of Pedro Salomé in Nanofabrication for optoelectronics and energy application (NOA) group. INL. H. Cruz is graduated in Industrial Chemistry (Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, 2006) and, in 2011, completed his PhD in Chemistry - Specialization in Green Electrochemistry (Universitat Autònoma Barcelona, Spain). Part of his thesis was included in several renown peer-reviewed journals, as Green Chemistry and Electrochimica Acta. I also had the opportunity to work in Queen’s University Ionic Liquid Laboratory (QUILL) Research Centre, Belfast, under the supervision of Kenneth R. Seddon, which promoted my ability to be innovative and successful in different environments and research groups, providing solid advanced training in several areas of knowledge. After a sabbatical period (2012-2014), he started to work at LAQV-REQUIMTE, FCT-NOVA, as research fellow in a FCT Project. He did is post-Doctoral research (2015-2018) in the same institution, where he is now a Junior Researcher (DL-57, 2019-2024). As result from his academical dedication, H. Cruz already published 30 papers in international journals (534 citations, h-index 13, since 2018 has 424 citations, h-index 11), having at the moment 4 submitted papers and 3 more in preparation. He is also co-author of 1 European and 1 National patents. Moreover, 22 of the 30 papers were issued in the last five years, including 8 as first and 11 as corresponding author. In the same period, he also presented 12 oral communications and 8 posters in international and national conferences, being invited as guest editor of a special issue (“Sustainable Functional Materials”) in Sustainability journal and as review editor of Chemistry Frontiers in green and sustainable chemistry, organic and electrochemistry fields. He was responsible to organize 3 dissemination events: 6th PYCheM, being part of the committee conference, and open days-Ciência Viva at FCT-NOVA). It is also important emphasize the participation as researcher team member or PI in 3 international projects: 1) Eutectic Systems as Sustainable Electrolytes for Energy Storage (PI: H. Cruz; ref. MIT-EXPL/CS/0055/2021; 2022-2023; PT-USA); 2) FCT-CAPES project: Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and Ionic Liquids (ILs) or Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) for water purification processes (PI: L. C. Branco; 2019-2022), developing several new ILs and DES to combine with COFs; 3) Sunstorage: Harvesting and storage of solar energy (PI: A. Mendes, LEPABE; POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016387; 2017-2020), contributing with expertise in electrochemistry and alternative electrolytes for Dye sensitized solar cells. Furthermore, he has been involved in 3 national FCT funding projects: 1) Organic Redox Mediators for Energy Conversion (PI: P. Branco; PTDC/QUI-QOR/7450/2020; 2021-2024), as leadership of the electrochemistry and electrolyte related tasks; 2) Development and Application of Electrochromic and Magnetic Ionic Liquids (PI: F. Pina; PTDC/CTM-NAN/120658/2010; 2012-2015), 3) ConChiMOL - Novas moléculas estruturalmente contortadas e quirais para aplicações optoeletrónicas", (PI: A. Burke; PTDC/QUI-QOR/2022.01391.PTDC; 2023-2027), as leadership of the electrochemistry related tasks. H. Cruz already co-coordinated a LAQV-REQUIMTE project entitled Advanced Multifunctional Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles containing Polyoxometalate based Ionic-Liquids (2017-2019). He already supervised 9 bachelor students, mentored 6 MSc and 7 PhD students. My experience and research interests in energy field can contribute for new advances in alternative electrolytes based on ILs and DES for application in ECDs, solar cells, batteries and supercapacitors devices, as well as in develop new materials for such applications mainly in battery
