Sofia is a researcher on energy systems with experience in both the research and the private sector, in Portugal and abroad. Her work focuses on low carbon energy systems and on energy transitions at European, national and urban scale. She has worked on climate services, competitiveness of H2, electrification of the economy, materials and water use for low-carbon energy technologies, urban energy system transitions, as well as on the vulnerability and adaptation of energy systems to climate change. She is an experienced project manager with robust skills on quantitative analysis, effective communication of results and stakeholder engagement processes, including national, regional and local authorities. Within the last 15 years she has developed and used several energy systems models for research and policy support for the Portuguese Ministries of Economy and of the Environment, such as the National Climate Change Programme among other. The TIMES_PT model developed by Sofia is the basis of Portuguese climate change policies since 2008. She coordinated the 2.7 M€ ERA-NET CLIM2POWER project and has cooperated in 7 EU and 3 national research projects on energy-economy-environment modelling. Sofia worked as a researcher for the European Commission – Joint Research Centre. She has a PhD from Leiden University (NL), a MSc. in Environmental Management and Policy from Lund University (SE) and a BSc in Environmental Engineering from NOVA University. Sofia has an h-index 13 (Scopus); 34 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals (555 citations on Scopus, 1096 on Google Scholar), 7 book chapters and more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed conferences. She regularly gives lectures in PhD and MSc classes, has supervised and co-supervised several PhD students, 6 MSc students, and 7 young exchange researchers from Switzerland, Croatia, Italy, Perú, Brazil and Tunisia. Sofia is a key-responsible for the co-creation of the Energy & Climate Research area at CENSE/NOVA-FCT since 2004 with Júlia Seixas (its coordinator). Since January 2020 Sofia is the Head of Unit of the Resource Economics Unit at LNEG-The National Energy and Geology Laboratory in Portugal. Since March 2020 she is an invited Assistant Professor at NOVA University School of Science and Technology on MSc course Air, Energy, Climate on Sustainable Cities.
