Carla Machado is a researcher at VICARTE ("Glass and Ceramics for the Arts") at NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT-NOVA). She earned her PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, with a specialization in Conservation Science, with the project entitled "From the texts to the laboratory - a study for the preservation of historical grisailles". Her current research has been focused on the characterization, technical art history, and degradation of glass and glass-based materials (glass paints, glazes). Her scientific activity includes a total of 8 papers in indexed journals, 5 conference proceedings, and 4 extended abstracts, and her research dissemination activities comprise 12 posters and 14 oral presentations at international and national conferences. She has been a team member of 2 accesses to the Alba Synchrotron facility (Refs. 2020094563, 2020094561) and 3 FIXLAB actions, 2 to the Instituto de Quimica e Fisica Rocasolano (CSIC) -“Non-invasive grisaille paint characterization on stained-glass windows” and “Non-invasive grisaille paint characterization on stained-glass windows (2)”, funded by IPERION HS in 2021 and 2022, and 1 to the Centro National de Investigación Sobre la Evolución Humana (ICTS) - “Documentation of artistic production patterns and alteration pathologies in glass and glazes through µ-CT”, funded by IPERION HS in 2023. She is currently team member of the FCT-funded project ChromAz – “The Chromatic Journey of the Portuguese Azulejo” and collaborator on the FCT-funded project MAGICA – “Magic Lantern: Study, Safeguard, Uses and Resuses in 19th Century Portugal” She has lectured and tutored in several courses at the Department of Conservation and Restoration and VICARTE at FCT-NOVA (Technical Art History, History of Glass and Ceramic, Project 2 curricular courses) and mentored international students within the Erasmus+ program.
