Ana Carina Manjua is a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, Netherlands) since March 2023. In this role, she is pioneering the development of advanced heart-on-chip technologies in collaboration with her co-host institution, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland). Dr. Manjua holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, a post-graduate qualification in Bioengineering from MIT Portugal, and a PhD in Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine from Instituto Superior Técnico, with collaborative work at the University of Twente (Netherlands). From 2021 to 2023, she was the Manager of FDA regulatory processes and Coordinator of clinical trials at Bioceramed - Cerâmicos para Aplicações Médicas, Lda. Her primary research interests are centered around the advancement of cardiovascular tissue engineering. With a solid background in materials science and biomedical engineering, Dr. Manjua's work is at the intersection of nanotechnology and its biomedical applications. She focuses on the development of intelligent materials and biomedical devices designed to enhance healthcare outcomes. Her current research involves scaffold design, stem cell and cardiac cell culturing, integrated in the fabrication of microfluidic platforms using advanced 3D printing and soft lithography techniques. In addition to her research, Dr. Manjua is deeply committed to scientific outreach and communication. She has authored and co-authored six publications in high-impact journals and is actively working on four more. She has presented her research at numerous international conferences and has served as a reviewer for several journals, including those published by Nature Publishing Group. Since 2021, she has been an invited member of the editorial board for Frontiers. Dr. Manjua has supervised four Bachelor's and Master's students in Portugal and the Netherlands and is currently mentoring two Master's students—one from IST-Portugal and another from TU/e-Netherlands. She has collaborated with leading researchers from Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Since 2016, she has been a teaching assistant for three courses in both Portugal and the Netherlands, and she has been invited to deliver several seminars on topics ranging from regenerative medicine to 3D design and microfluidic technologies. In 2024, Dr. Manjua joined the organizing committee for the prestigious MicroTAS conference in Montreal (Canada) and is actively promoting the upcoming 2025 MicroTAS conference in Adelaide (Australia). Throughout her dynamic and interdisciplinary career, Dr. Manjua has demonstrated the ability to thrive in both academic and industrial settings. She is currently preparing an intellectual property (IP) patent for her main Marie Curie project at TU/e. Moving forward, she intends to continue her research through innovative projects with potential for IP development and industry integration. Dr. Manjua aspires to build a distinguished academic career, establishing herself as a leading researcher with strong collaborations between academia and industry.
