Joao Pinto da Costa graduated in Biotechnological Engineering in 2005 at the University of the Algarve (UAlg), and soon thereafter completed his Masters in Medical Diagnostics at Cranfield University (UK). He obtained his PhD in Environmental Chemistry in 2014 from UAlg. Presently, João is an Assistant Researcher ("CEEC2021") at the Department of Chemistry and the Center for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro. He is currently the author or co-author of nearly 90 peer-reviewed papers, the author of 6 Books/Book Chapters and the co-inventor of a registered patent. He has supervised and co-supervised several 3rd year and MSc students and co-supervised two PhD students. Within the framework of funded projects that he leads/has lead, João has also supervised two Post-Doctoral Researchers. Such projects centered on the development and validation of analytical methods directed towards microplastic identification and quantification in environmental matrices, as well as the development of fungi-mediated processes for (micro)plastic biodegradation, with subsequent valorization of the generated biomass.  João is an active Reviewer for numeral publications and Funding Agencies and is an Editor for Journal of Hazardous Materials, as well as for Water Emerging Contaminants & Nanoplastics. His works are mostly centered in the fields of Earth and Environmental Sciences, with some emphasis on Chemical Sciences and Analytical Chemistry. His professional activities have resulted in the interaction with over 130 collaborators, of which nearly a quarter (22%) stem from international cooperation.
