Through my career I have contributed to the debate on the sustainability and resilience of social-ecological systems (SES), specifically on the adaptive nature of SES and how human-nature interactions influence the use and management of natural resources. I have based my research in combining methods in innovative ways, such as merging survey data or participatory methods with explicit spatial representation (e.g. participatory mapping) regarding people’s uses, local knowledge or needs, perceptions and attitudes towards conservation, with biophysical data to model and understand human-nature relationships. I have studied tropical, arid and urban SES, often using the biocultural diversity and/or ecosystem services approaches to develop tools and ultimately support sustainable pathways and policy. During the last years I have been dedicating more time to research on urban ecology. I am interested in urban environmental justance and the development of the urban green infrastructure towards contributing for better urban planning, design, and management.
