Carla Alexandra Castro Cunha

Carla Alexandra Castro Cunha is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences of University of Maia since 2020 (formerly known as ISMAI, Instituto Universitário da Maia), where she coordinates the Master in Clinical and Health Psychology and teaches in the PhD program, Master programs in Psychology and in the undergraduate program in Psychology. She entered the teaching staff of ISMAI in 2003 and has also been an Invited Teacher in European universities such as University of Jyväskylä (Finland, since 2012 with an annual teaching course on Emotion Focused Therapy). She also has occasional teaching invitations in Universitat de Barcelona and Universitat Ramon Llull (Barcelona, Spain) and Universidad de Comillas (Madrid, Spain). As a researcher, she is currently an integrated member of CPUP - Centro de Psicologia da Universidade do Porto. Presently, she co-coordinates the AURORA@COVID19-EU project [Articulating a Unified Response to the Covid-19 Outbreak Reconstruction After loss in Europe; reference: 2021-1-PT01-KA220-VET-000033092], funded by the Erasmus+ program ERASMUS+ / KA2 Parcerias Estratégicas / Formação Profissional (from 2022 until 2024), that integrates an international consortium of 5 partners from 4 European countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Denmark). She has participated in several research projects in the field of depression and psychotherapy, funded by external agencies (e.g. FCT or EEA - European Economic Area grants). She has also coordinated the project Empowering Emotion-Focused Therapy practice in Europe between 2020 and 2023 [EmpoweringEFT@EU - Referência: 2020-1-PT01-KA202-078724], funded by ERASMUS+ / KA2 Parcerias Estratégicas / Formação Profissional, that integrated an international consortium of 6 partners in 5 European countries (Portugal, Spain, Ireland, Germany and UK), now concluded. She is a member of the research team of project DiNA (The Diagnosis Network App, funded by the FCT, ongoing until 2024). Carla Cunha leads a team of PhD students with research studies on process-outcome research in psychotherapy, especially in the modality of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). She has been doing research on depression, (self-)forgiveness and emotional injuries/trauma and anxiety-related difficulties. In her curriculum in Ciência Vitae, the most frequent terms in the context of scientific outputs are: Process Outcome-Research (e.g., emotion, narrative and symptom change); Emotion Focused Therapy; Study of Significant Change Events; Therapists Contributions to change (e.g., techniques, alliance issues or relational processes); Depression; Dialogical Self-Theory; Identity; Human Development. She has advised/supervised more than 40 completed Master Dissertations and several PhD students, two of these PhDs now completed (Liliana Costa in 2022; Sara Silva in 2024). Carla Cunha completed her PhD at University of Minho in 2012 (Portugal). Her PhD thesis, with the title "Narrative change in emotion-focused therapy: Co-constructing innovative self-narratives", written in English, was advised by Miguel M. Gonçalves (University of Minho, Portugal) and co-advised by Jaan Valsiner (Clark University, USA) and funded by a PhD scholarship by FCT (SFRH/BD/30880/2006). She is a Psychologist, with a specialization in Clinical and Health Psychology and an advanced specialization in Psychotherapy (Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses; registration number 1004). She has received training and clinical supervision in Emotion Focused Therapy since 2008 and is a certified Emotion Focused Therapist according to the International Society on Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT). In 2016, she became one of the founding members of the Portuguese Society of Emotion Focused Therapy (SPTFE), where she is currently a member of the Board. In 2022, she was elected Chair of the Research and Education subcommittee of the isEFT (www.iseft.org), by the international community of EFT.
