Mila Crippa is a PhD candidate in Heritage Science at the School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Cultural Heritage Studies from the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy, and a Master's degree in Techniques for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the Università degli Studi di Genova, Italy. In 2018, Mila joined the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels for a post-graduate internship and later, the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge, UK) for a one-year fellowship for the Project MINIARE (Manuscript Illumination: Non-invasive Analysis, Research and Expertise). During this time, she gained experience in the application of imaging and spectroscopic techniques (FORS, XRF, Macro-XRF and Raman) for the identification and characterisation of art materials used in paintings and illuminated manuscripts. In 2022, Mila was awarded a 4-year doctoral grant (UI/BD/153081/2022) from the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) for the project “Bridging Science & Art for the Study and Preservation of Lac Dye Colours”. Developed in collaboration with the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV, Lisbon), the Department of Conservation and Restoration (FCT NOVA) and The British Museum of London, this doctoral project aims to provide new insights into the variety of lac dye colours from a historical and chemical perspective. From 2023, Mila is a team member of the project ‘Revive | The threads of the past weaving the future: The colors from the Royal Textile Factory of Covilhã, 1764-1850’ financed by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (2022.01243.PTDC).
