Ana Carolina Bione Kunicki Peres

Carolina Kunicki is Assistant Professor of Neuroanatomy at the Department of Veterinary Sciences at the Vasco da Gama University School (EUVG), Member of the Board of Directors at the Vasco da Gama Research Center (CIVG), Finance and Project Manager at CIVG, and Research Collaborator at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra. Carolina received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of São Paulo, Brazil (2007 -2012), funded by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) scholarship, a highly competitive grant. She investigated the role of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in recent and remote memories under the supervision of Prof. Koichi Sameshima. Carolina developed her Ph.D. collaborating with Prof. Miguel Nicolelis Lab (Duke University) and Prof. Sidarta Ribeiro Lab (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte). This was a period of great learning as Carolina acquired expertise in animal behavior, stereotaxic surgery, building microelectrodes arrays, large-scale multi-unit recording, as well as in immunohistochemical and optical microscopy methods. In 2012 Carolina received a position as a postdoctoral researcher at the Edmond and Lily Safra International Neuroscience Institute (IIN-ELS, Macaíba, Brasil) under the supervision of Prof. Miguel Nicolelis. Then she engaged in the brain-to-brain project, where Miguel Pais-Vieira, Carolina, and collaborators demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to transfer sensorimotor information in real-time between the brains of two rats (Brain-to-Brain Interfaces). In 2015 Carolina took the position of Assistant Professor at IIN-ELS and furthered the studies on neural dynamics in tactile discrimination. In 2018 she was awarded a competitive grant from CNPq (2018), as a project leader to develop new neuroprosthetic devices to restore tactile function. This enabled Carolina to start working as an independent researcher. She also helped to structure the Graduate Program in Neuroengineering at the IIN-ELS, of which she was vice-coordinator, taught postgraduate classes, supervised 6 master's students, and co-supervised 8. In 2021 Carolina started a new challenge working with the Neuronal Circuits and Behavior Group led by Prof. João Peça at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC). Carolina's focus research at this Institute is to add my knowledge in electrophysiology with the registration of multiple brain regions to investigate the neural circuits involved in social behavior and genetic disorders.
