João Carlos Martins is an Integrate Member of CinTurs, Research Center for Tourism Sustainability and Well-being at the University of the Algarve (Portugal). Is a Research Fellow on the BEST MED projet, funded by INTERREG program under the Grant Number: 5987, on the areas of Cultural Heritage, Urban Tourism, Sustainable Development, Governance and Participation, Auscultation and Stakeholders Engagement. It has responsibilities on research about Cultural Routes and Stakeholders Participation, using Policy Learning Seminars, Focus Groups, Living Labs and Fam Trips. It has also responsibilities on international partners engagement and compliance. Works in diverse areas of Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, Economic and Social Geography) with emphasis on Urban Studies, Cultural Heritage and Participation. Actual scientific interests are around urban transformation, particularly on multidimensional questions around Cultural Heritage; Creative Cities ; Knowledge Cities and Contemporary societies; where leisure, culture and tourism are introduced as processes of public and private socioeconomic regeneration. It holds a Ph.D in Sociology (2015) by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, at the Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais Research Centre. Has a master¿s in urban Anthropology in (2009) by ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and Degree in Sociology (20004) by Universidade Nova de Lisboa Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas. Published 5 articles in journals and chapters, as first author and 8 as second author. Has published 3 Projects Reports. Has Organized 5 events and participated in 23 events. Pos-doctoral Fellow in 2 funded European projects (BEST MED-INTERREG and ROCK-HORIZON 2020), and Researcher in two Intervention 2 projects (SAFEIN and Rede Res do Chao Marvil, funded by the Municipality of Lisbon). In their professional activities interacted with more than 20 collaborators in co-authorship of scientific papers. In 2016, with SAFE!N Social Intervention project [CML BIP/ZIP funded project nº95], was a scientific advisor addressing the recent mass transformation of a traditional Lisbon¿s nightlife neighborhood (Cais do Sodre). This field work, on organizing the projects sessions and meetings, as well as a sociological data research crossed a multiplicity of players: academics, social workers on public health, night users, workers and nightlife businessmen, residents, local social movements, and municipal officials towards a safe night certification. This project was integrated on Party+, a European Network of cities and social agencies around safe night certification. Recently has published a newspaper article about the consequences of COVID-19 on this space, under the LX NIGHTS Research Network with other international authors. In 2017 was a Researcher on Social Intervention on Rede Res do Chao Marvila [CML BIP/ZIP funded project nº10], located on a Social Housing Neighborhood of Eastern Lisbon. Became a fieldwork coordinator of community intervention and citizen participation in social housing areas. This expertise in the terrain permitted to become enrolled as research fellow at the ICS, in 2018, working in the Horizon 2020 ROCK project, being responsible for its territorial diagnosis and the analysis of cultural heritage led-urban regeneration processes. It contacted with a multiplicity of Public Officials (in the areas of Cultural Heritage and Social Assistance) as well as private agents (restaurants, art galeiries, cultural associations). It had responsabilities on statistical and other data collection, theorectical research and promotion of co-participation with Living Labs methodologies (academics, social movements, public officials and residents), reuse of old industrial areas with creative and innovative forms of urban use (as the urban agriculture) as well as the reoccupation of ground floor stores with cultural uses. It was responsible for the content creation of the project's documentary.
