I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), University of Porto, with a strong interest in the molecular mechanisms underlying diseases associated with non-coding DNA. My research focuses on unraveling the role of non-coding sequences in cis-regulation and their contributions to human diseases, combining genome editing, cell biology, and advanced bioinformatics. My current research focuses on analyzing high-throughput data to study how high-fat diets and glucose exposure drive chromatin remodeling and regulate pancreatic gene expression. In 2022, I completed a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Porto. My doctoral research centered on the disruption of pancreatic cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and their impact on pancreatic development and disease. By analyzing histone modifications, transcription, chromatin accessibility, and 3D chromatin interactions, I identified CREs in the zebrafish pancreas and their human functional counterparts. This work uncovered disease-associated sequences across species, including CREs potentially linked to pancreatic cancer, and resulted in a high-impact publication in Nature Communications (IF=17.7, Q1). I presented this research in four oral communications at national and international conferences. Throughout my academic career, I have contributed to several peer-reviewed publications. As first author, I published in journals such as Current Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine, Environmental Microbiology Reports (IF=3.5, Q1), and Medical Microbiology and Immunology (IF=3.2, Q1). As a co-author, I have been published in Cell Reports (IF=9.4, Q1), European Journal of Public Health (IF=2.2, Q1), and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (IF=2.3, Q1). My commitment to mentorship is reflected in my ongoing co-supervision of a PhD student and a Master’s student, as well as my successful supervision of a Bachelor’s Erasmus student in 2021 and a Master's student in 2024. I also actively engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and the dissemination of scientific knowledge through teaching and workshops, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.
