HENRIQUE MANUEL DE CASTRO FARIA SALGADO completed a Degree in Applied Physics in 1985 from the University of Porto Faculty of Sciences. In the same year, he joined the optoelectronics research group as Research Assistant at INESC Porto - Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores do Porto and in 1987, became Tutor Assistant at the Physics Department, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto for 2 years. He finished the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1993 at Bangor University, School of Electronic Engineering, North Wales, UK. From 1993 to 1994, he worked as a Research Assistant in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems at the University of Wales, Bangor, UK and from 1994 to 1995 and 1997-1999, he worked as ¿a Research Fellow¿ at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University College London, London, UK. He moved to Portugal in 1995 after receiving a Research Fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) to conduct post-doctoral research as a senior researcher at the Optoelectronics and Electronic System Unit of INESC Porto. From 1996 to 1997, he worked as an Invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal. He entered the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 1999. Since 2002, he has been an Associate Professor, teaching courses in Telecommunications in master's and doctoral programs. He was the former Director of the joint doctoral programme in Telecommunications between the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto (Map-tele) and has been a member of the scientific committee of the same programme since 2007. He was also the Coordinator of the Telecommunications section of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, FEUP and from 2002 to 2003, was the Coordinator of the course in Optical Communications and Technology of the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering and Computers, MEEC, FEUP. He has experience in management positions as a member of the Scientific Council of INESC TEC and Area leader and project manager in R&D. In 2007, he founded the Optical and Electronic Technologies area of the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit of INESC TEC after successfully having attracted funding within the framework of the FCT reequipment programme, which he led until 2019. He was also a visiting professor at CERN - Centre for Particle Physics, Geneva, in the framework of the ACEOLE project. In scientific research, he was involved as a principal investigator in 9 projects with national funding and participated as a researcher in 20 more projects, 9 of which with European funding. He published over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, 5 book chapters and registered 7 patents. He supervised 12 doctoral theses, 3 of which are still ongoing and 50 master's dissertations. According to the Google Scholar classification, the H index is 27, and the I10 index is 62. He was a reviewer for several scientific journals, including IEEE and IET, in the area of optical communications, telecommunications and antennas. He was also an evaluator of research projects for the German Research Council, Innovation Agency and for FCT and an evaluator for awarding doctoral grants by FCT. He was part of the organizing and technical committees of several international conferences. He has been a member of the IEEE Photonics Society since 1990. He is a member of the Photonics, Communications and the Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies of the IEEE. His research interests include radio-over-fibre technology, signal processing in coherent optical systems, modelling of nonlinearities, photonic integrated circuit design for microwave applications and smart/compact antenna design.
