In my PhD in the lab of Prof. Yves Barral, ETH, Zurich, I discovered a new checkpoint, the NoCut checkpoint. I then moved on to understand neuroepithelial development in zebrafish at the University of Cambridge, UK in the lab of Prof. William Harris. I got mechanistic insights on how nuclei move within tissues and how this ensures proper tissue development and maturation. This work was essential to secure my position as PI at the MPI-CBG in Dresden, Germany in 2010. Here I expanded my research portfolio and started cross-disciplinary collaborations. After my tenure ended in 2019, I moved to the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Oeiras, PT, where I am a group leader served as Deputy Director of Science. Since 2010, my lab has made significant headway in dissecting cell biological phenomena that shape retinogenesis. In all our studies we implemented quantitative approaches and combined experimental work with computer science and theory. We found that rim cell migration is an important driver of this tissue rearrangement during optic cup formation and elucidated of how these cells move and interact with the underlying extracellular matrix. At the neuroepithelial stage, we extracted the mechanisms that drive interkinetic nuclear migration (IKNM) and made progress in understanding the biological relevance of this widespread phenomenon. We further showed that tissue architecture can influence apical positioning of nuclei. We further dissected phenomena of retinal neuronal migration and ensuing lamination. We investigated the migration modes of diverse retinal neurons, which were understudied until then, including retinal ganglion cell migration, horizontal cell migration and emerging photoreceptor cell migration. In addition, we revealed the division patterns of retinal linages over three divisions. Overall, this led to 17 publications as a senior author in international peer-reviewed journals. I also contributed to collaborative papers and 12 review articles. I serve as ad-hoc reviewer for many international journals, including Development, Developmental Cell, Current Biology, Nature, among others, and review grants for diverse agencies among which are ERC, Wellcome Trust, National Science Foundation, HFSP and EMBO, to name a few. I taught two undergraduate modules in the Dresden Master program. In Portugal, I teach Master’s and PhD students twice a year. I was and am part of 36 Thesis advisory and 17 defence committees six of them international. I served as a member of the habilitation committee of Shahad Albadri at the Paris Sorbonne University. In the last decade, I have been invited as a speaker to 53 international conferences and workshops including prestigious hosts like EMBO, Gordon and ‘The Company of Biologists’ and many more. I could secure an HFSP Career Development Award, four grants funded by the German Research Foundation and an ERC consolidator grant in 2019. Furthermore, I was awarded the José A. Campos-Ortega Young Scientist Award of the German Society for Developmental Biology. I became a member of the EMBO Young Investigator Network in 2015 and a full EMBO member in 2020.
